Maspalomas is a resort town in the south of Gran Canaria, in Spain’s Canary Islands. It’s known for its vast 6 kilometer expanse of sand dunes that runs along the coast. There are plenty of things to do in Maspalomas and the surrounding areas Aguila, Las Burras, San Agustin and Playa del Ingles. Maspalomas is an up market resorts with some of Gran Canarias finest hotels and eateries.
Things to do in Maspalomas
The closest harbour to Maspalomas is Puerto Deportivo Pasito Blanco, just 10 minutes drive away. Deportivo Pasito Blanco is home to some very luxurious yachts and catamarans making boat trips one of our best things to do in Maspalomas. The marine life in the Atlantic Ocean is nothing short of spectacular with possibilities of sighting several species of whales and dolphins. The most common are bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales. It is important to look for boats bearing the Barco Azul/Blue Boat flag as these are responsible whale and dolphin watching boats.
There are plenty of water sport activities available from nearby beaches Playa del Ingles, Taurito beach and Mogan beach. The most popular activities include jet ski safaris, parascending and kayaking. You may need to take a short 5 – 10 minute drive to these beaches to take part in water sport activities, but there are many companies that will include transfers to and from your hotels if you spend a certain amount.
Every keen diver knows that Gran Canaria has some pretty amazing dive sites. There are many dive sites just off the coast of Maspalomas stretching west to Pajar. You can make a beach dive at Playa Pasito Blanco which are great for first time divers. For certified divers you can dive with Angel Sharks at Fara Reef. What really makes diving one of our favourite things to do in Maspalomas is the variety. There are plenty of wreck dives not too far away such as the Piper Plane Wreck & Meteor Wreck.
Maspalomas golf course is surrounded by the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve. The beautiful course is flat with long fairways. We believe Maspalomas golf course is one of the best and most attractive courses in the Canary Islands. The sea breeze makes this 18 hole course extremely enjoyable. The course hosts international events, has a practice course, putting green and driving range. For keen golfers, this will not just be the best thing to do in Maspalomas, but the best thing to do in whilst in Gran Canaria.

Enjoy a Spa day
Due to Maspalomas being a very high-end, luxurious resort, there are many 4 & 5 star hotels. Some of which will allow outside visitors use of their spas. Many locals and tourists will enjoy a day at a wellness spa to relax and unwind.
Sometimes the best thing to do in Maspalomas is to do nothing at all. Enjoy a day relaxing on one of the beaches. There are several beaches to visit in Maspalomas and the surrounding resorts. Maspalomas beach is very clean and has lots of bars and shops to visit with a nice boulevard. You can easily spend your day here.
Walk through the sand dunes
The Maspalomas sand dunes have played a big part in tourism on the south of Gran Canaria and are considered a protected nature reserve. Situated between Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles it covers an area of around 1000 acres. You can access the dunes easily from Maspalomas beach and Playa del Ingles. Taking a stroll through the dunes during sunset is a must. Try to avoid the afternoons when the sand becomes very hot.
Bars and Restaurants
Like most tourist resorts in the Canary Islands, Maspalomas has an abundance of great cafes, restaurants and cocktail bars to choose from. But no need to worry, we do not expect you to try them all! We have put together a list of our favourite establishments that we believe to be the best eateries and bars in Maspalomas.
Our favourite Cafe is Il Caffettino, an Italian coffee bar open since 2015. Opening early at 7:30 makes this ideal for the early risers. Here you will find real Italian coffee and a lot of coffee variety. Original Italian breakfasts with a variety of croissants and more Italian specialities. Il Caffettino in San Fernando Square offers a mixture of Italian and Canarian atmosphere. You can stop for a sandwich, homemade mini pizza specialities or a fresh chilled beer.

Enjoying a cocktail on the evening is a must whilst on holiday which is why it is mentioned on our list of things to do in Maspalomas. The majority of bars in any holiday resort will have a cocktail menu but not every bar can make them like Lola´s Bar. You will find Lola´s Bar at the foot of the famous Maspalomas lighthouse. Here, you will always be welcomed with a big smile. Spend your afternoon relaxing whilst listening to the chill-out music played live by their DJ. Also, thanks to their all day open kitchen you can regain strength when you need it. We recommend sampling their special burgers. At Lola´s Bar it is mandatory to enjoy the beach, toast to the sunsets and share a cocktail or two!
